Teaching Methods of the Teacher that you Observed
In my three-day observation with Miss Layli, the method that she used is more on the memorization and rote learning. She considers rote learning and memorization to be necessary steps in learning the basics. In one of her classes about animals, she prints out photos of animals and tells the students in English and Bahasa what kind of animal is on the picture. Next is she asks what kind of food the animals eat and makes a simple phrase. For example, "Rabbit eats grass" and "Duck eats bran" After she checks that each student has mastered the topic, she then gives them evaluation.
Their Learning Materials and Innovation
Their learning materials vary from teacher to teacher and what their subject is. Since the school provided them with learning materials such as books, art materials, projectors and speaker in each classroom, the innovate it in their own way and meets with the students standards.
What I've seen during my stay at SD Muhammadiyah Kleco is that they have projectors in each classroom so that teachers can use it if they have power point presentation; if they want students to watch a video or let them listen to music for art and dancing subject, they can also use the speaker provided by the school. The teachers are also allocated with art materials such as bond paper, scissors, paste, tapes, etc. The school also have computers with printers so that they can teach and evaluate the students effectively using printed materials. Even though we are in the 21st century, at SD Muhammadiyah Kleco, they also use printed material such as books in the library wherein they can get information about their topics.
Authentic Assessment used by the Teachers
Teachers have different ways of assessing students' learning. In what I've observed, teachers in the school uses different kinds of authentic assessment. Miss Layli lets hher students in Grade 6 create a story based on the lesson she had with them during that day to check their usage of grammar and also to check the level of their knowledge in English words. Some teachers let the students work on experiments, portfolios, presentations, and projects.
